Safety Tips

BE A SAFE PEDESTRIAN
· Look for bicyclists traveling with or against traffic before stepping out into the street.
· Don't step in front of a bicycle. If you think there is a conflict, just stop and let the bike go around you.
· Wear reflective clothing when walking at night.
· Think of a bicycle as a vehicle and remember that they cannot stop too quickly.

BE A CAUTIOUS MOTORIST
· Remember that it is harder to see a bicycle than another car.
· Check rear and side view mirrors before opening a car door. You may cause a bicyclist to run into the open door and be injured.
· Before turning right, watch for bicycles in the right lane or bike lane. A bicyclist going straight has the right of way before a turning automobile.
· Pass a cyclist with care, look for his/her hand signals as a guide to intentions or a signal for you to pass.
· Don't drive parallel with a cyclist. Go around the cycle as quickly as possible. It is nerve wracking for a cyclist to be riding next to an automobile due to the wind factor.
· Be aware of how road conditions affect cyclists. Potholes, cinders, wet leaves, etc. are harder on a bicycle than a car. Watch for swerving cycle movements when road conditions are poor.

BE A THOUGHTFUL RESIDENT
· Keep the roadway clear in front of your house. Leaves, cinders, snow, ice, and garbage of all kinds can cause a cyclist to skid and be seriously injured.
· Don't park too near the intersection.
· Bicyclists need room and safe distance to turn into a street.
· Watch for bicycles before pulling out of your driveway.
· Before turning left, watch for bicycles in the left turn lane.

RULES OF THE ROAD
According to PITT Bike Patrol Officer Richard Troy, the Legislation regulating cyclists provides that:
· Bicycles are considered vehicles and must abide by the same traffic rules of the road that apply to motorists.
· Cyclists must ride with the flow of traffic, not facing traffic.
· Cyclists must ride on the street, not on sidewalks.
· Cyclists must cross with vehicular, not pedestrian signals.
· Cyclists must wear reflective clothing and use lights at night.
